More than 7 Million Keurig Machines Recalled over Burn Hazard
The wildly popular Keurig coffee and tea brewing machines populated many a Christmas and Hanukkah gift wish list holiday season. But if you gleefully unwrapped one, take note. The Massachusetts-based manufacturer recently issued a voluntary recall of more than 7 million Keurig machines after some 200 incident reports - 90 of which involved burns.
The company warns that its Keurig Mini Plus Brewing Systems sold throughout the United States and Canada over the past five years can malfunction, spraying hot water and potentially causing burn injuries. Reported incidents typically have occurred when two cups of a hot coffee or tea drink are made one after another.
The recall affects the Keurig model K10, previously identified as model B31. These single-serve brewers stand approximately 11 inches high, come in 13 colors with silver trim and have 6-ounce, 8-ounce and 10-ounce brewing options. They were made between December 2009 and July 2014 and sold for about $100 at major retailers including Target, Walmart, Kohl's and Kmart through December. To confirm whether your Keurig machine is included in the recall, look for an identification printed on a white sticker on the bottom of your brewer. If it begins with "31" it's affected.
If you own a recalled machine and have not suffered an injury while using it, you can contact Keurig online or at 844-255-7886 for a free repair kit. In the meantime, company officials recommend that you "avoid brewing more than two cups in rapid succession and maintain an arm’s length distance from the brewer during the brewing process," the company's website reads.
However, if you have suffered a burn injury using your Keurig brewer, seek medical treatment immediately and keep your machine intact. It may be needed as evidence should you decide to file a product liability case. Orlando's Todd E.
