If you drive a Chrysler-made sport utility vehicle, take note. Detroit-based Chrysler Group LLC just announced it’s recalling some 25,250 Jeep and Dodge SUVs sold globally. The recall will allow the automaker to address a potentially dangerous issue with the affected vehicles’ brakes.
An investigation and, ultimately, the recall were prompted by a supplier’s concern about a part that accommodates Ready Alert Braking, a safety system that primes brakes for optimal response when making a sudden stop. The system is designed to anticipate when a driver quickly releases the throttle pedal and may be preparing to make an emergency stop. In response, the electronic stability control pump engages to set brake pads against the rotors in an effort to reduce the time required for a full brake application.
Investigators found that in vehicles affected by the recall, brake fluid flow was being restricted too much during certain aggressive braking maneuvers. Though brake fluid was not lost or out of compliance in tested vehicles, the pedal feel simply was inconsistent with customers’ expectations. So, Chrysler has committed to updating software to improve brake fluid flow and restore appropriate pedal feel. This service will be completed at no cost to registered owners of affected vehicles.
The recall primarily affects certain Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango SUVs from model years 2012 and 2013. A Chrysler spokesperson assures that thus far, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the braking issue, and that the company will notify registered owners when to schedule repair services.
